“The Mulatto: A Reader’s Interpretation” Literature exists only when it is read. Written word, devoid of the reader’s examination and interpretation, remains nothing more than a strategic assortment of consensual symbols. This premise establishes the foundation for which reader response criticism is built upon. Reader response criticism has two main focal points: the object communicated, and the character of the audience. In 1837, Victor Sejour’s piece entitled, “The Mulatto”, was first published in a black owned journal. One may infer that this story of racial exploitation and violent revenge was first read by a predominately black, educated community. However, in “The Mulatto”, Sejour’s rhetorical technique highlights the atrocious system of slavery, as the source of the depravity and misery that infects the minds and hearts of both black and white alike. Sejour tactically employs effective story telling methods, carefully selected diction, and an omnipresent element of duality; together, these components manipulate the reader’s analysis of the story in its entirety. ......
