In the third century BC, the Mediterranean’s greatest naval power was undoubtedly the city of Carthage. The word “Carthage”, in Phoenician, means “the New City.” And since the Carthaginians were descendants from Phoenicians and spoke the Phoenician language, the name stuck. In Latin, the word Phoenicia is Poeni, which gives the name for the wars between the two ancient states, the Punic Wars. The reason there were no longer any Phoenicians was because they had been conquered by the Persians in seventh century BC. Out of the Phoenicians’ failure, Carthage arose. And because of Phoenicia losing its independent statehood, Carthage evolved from a colony to a fully functioning independent state. While the Romans were gradually increasing their control over the Italian peninsula, the Carthaginians were expanding their empire over the majority of Northern Africa.
