Foundations of Utilitarianism Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In retrospect we must decide what is right or wrong in making moral decisions .In order to do so, there are Ethical theories set in place as guilder lines for decision making. These standards are used to evaluate actions and policies. “In effect such theories define what it means to act morally, and in doing so they stipulate in a general fashion the duties or obligations that fall upon us.” ( Munson, p.744) Essentially, The Utilitarian program was a theory of human motivations. The early English utilitarians linked their theories of human nature and moral acts. They believed that utilitarian ethics were always naturalistic for two important reasons. First, utilitarians viewed morality as being part of mans natural development. Moral rules are based upon human needs. Feelings and Emotions are explained as deriving from rational nature. Secondly, utilitarians in the English tradition explain obligations of morality by reference to an “ends”; Which people desire by nature. In other words all people are depicted as pursuing happiness.
