The online dictionary states self identity as the awareness of and identification with oneself as a separate individual. Self identification to Josephine Alibrandi not only meant the awareness of oneself as an individual but also the awareness of the culture and background surrounding ones past and ones future. Melina Marchetta positions the reader on a journey of self discovery and all the trials and tribulations that come in between. Through the novel �Looking for Alibrandi� we see that main character Josie is on a journey of self discovery. She finds out much about herself, her family, and her culture, and in the end, views her newfound knowledge as �emancipation� from her past problems and views her future as what she makes of it and that its her life to live - now more than ever.
