Societal Grievances Expressed in Literature
Authors have always been known to address the ills of society through their literature and humor. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain comments on the faults of the southern way of life. He does not overtly ridicule the South but takes jabs at it through the guise of a young boy and his journeys and encounters. Mark Twain uses irony to aid in his pursuit against the establishment, whether it is against the South or the various institutions of society.
From the perspective of a northerner during Mark Twain’s era the south would seem backward and jejune. Huckleberry Finn almost fully embodies these characteristics and is acting as Twain’s objective representative. Huckleberry is not objective in the traditional sense of the word. He is objective because he takes everything he sees as literal, and therefore the reader can believe what he says to be true. Twain sets this up very early in the novel with numerous examples.
