Living with HIV/AIDS AIDS was first identified in the United States of America in 1981. Since then, the epidemic has been steadily growing and by the end of 2004, there were estimated to be just over 1 million people living with HIV and approximately 415,000 people living with AIDS in the USA. AIDS is also thought to have killed over half a million Americans, which is nearly ten times the number of people killed in the Vietnam war, and more become infected every day. Basic Information on HIV/AIDS AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) is a condition in which the body's immune system breaks down and is unable to fight off infection. AIDS is caused by a virus called HIV, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. When a person is infected with HIV, the virus enters the body and lives and multiplies primarily in the white blood cells--cells that normally protect us from disease. The HIV virus weakens the immune system leaving the body vulnerable to infections and other illnesses, ranging from pneumonia to cancer.
