I. Brief Outline The Three Gorges Dam is a concrete gravity dam that spans the Yangtze River in the Hubei province of China. This 181-m higher mega-structure is over 2.3-km long and is managed by the Three Gorges Project Development Corporation. While official figures give a price tag of US$22.5 billion, skeptics estimate the cost to be as high as US$75 billion. With 26 turbines operating at full capacity in 2009, the dam will have a capacity of more than 18,200-megawatts, thus making it the largest hydroelectric damn in the world1. An additional six underground turbines have a planned installation date of 2010 and will be fully operational by 2011. II. Purpose of the Dam Hydroelectricity One major benefit of the dam is its ability to generate power in order to keep pace with China�s economic growth. It has been estimated that China�s power output must increase by 8 percent annually to meet the 6 percent annual increase in gross national product.
