Of the dozens of famous and not so famous works by Copland, I would have to say that my favorite by far is Rodeo. Like most average joes I heard a snippet of this masterpiece for the first time in a commercial for beef when I was little. Years later when I was in high school I had the opportunity to not only see it performed professionally by the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra but participate in an orchestral performance of it as well. After both of these encounters, I was intrigued to know more about a man named Aaron Copland.
Born to two immigrant parents, Aaron Copland came into the world on November 14, 1900 in Brooklyn , New York . His father, Harris Kaplan, came over from Russia to escape a military draft. As a mistake, an immigration officer wrote his name down as Harris Copland. He decided to keep this new name and a new country. (Butterworth 13) As a young Jewish family in Brooklyn , Harris opened a small shop selling dry goods in order to support his wife and five children.
