The poems “My Papa’s Waltz” by Theodore Roethke and “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden, show differing views of two fathers. “My Papa’s Waltz” shows a father who is rambunctious and who spends time playing with his child. In contrast, “Those Winter Sundays” shows a father who is more gentle and who spends all his time working for his children rather than actually playing and being close to them. The Main differing view of the two fathers is that in “My Papa’s Waltz” the speaker shows the father as playful and rambunctious. The father wrestles with the child up till bedtime. Also, the father drinks and this shows his lack of seriousness and how he might tend to be a little wild even with his son. Also, the father doesn’t take a lot of notice to the fact that they mess up the house while playing around. This is evident when the speaker says “We romped until the pans / slid from the kitchen shelf;” In addition to his liveliness, the father in “My Papa’s Waltz” spends time playing with his child.
