“The Mulatto”: A Reader’s Interpretation The son of prosperous San Dominican merchant and free Creole women, Victor Sejour was in the French Quarter of New Orleans in 1817. As a young adult, Sejour’s poetic genius began to exceed the confines of New Orlean’s existing institutions. During that time, New Orleans offered little opportunity for higher education, even for Sejour’s white contemporaries. In concordance with the customs and traditions of the elite Creole society, Sejour traveled to Paris in the pursuit of a higher education. To the young Victor Sejour, Paris endowed him with more than a proficient education. “It afforded him with that liberty and freedom that his own country denied him.” (Daley p. 4) While in Paris, far removed from racial prejudice and the atrocities of slavery, Sejour produced his first literary publication entitled, “Lemulâtre” (The Mulatto). “The Mulatto” illustrates the tragic life of a slave named Georges, who becomes despondent over the ruthlessly unjust murder of his wife.
