Walter Reed Center Fiasco Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
In February 2007, the Washington Post published two articles exposing the
maltreatment of soldiers in the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
Prior to the publication of these articles, a number of complaints that dated back to 2004
were filed, but substantial media and politic attention ensued due to the Washington
Post’s articles. In these articles, Dana Priest and Anne Hull expose the poor conditions in
Building 18 of the Army’s Medical Center. The workers in this medical center were
over-worked, under qualified, and apathetic according to Priest and Hull. These
conditions often interfered with the treatment of soldiers. The physical conditions of
Building 18 were also shocking; the building was filled with rodents and cockroaches,
mold, and had no heat or water. In an effort to correct these problems, the head of the
staff team in Building 18 was a clinical social worker who obtained a grant of $30,000
