Guilty Until Proven Innocent On April 15, 1920, shortly after three o’clock in the afternoon a robbery followed by a brutal murder occurred. Frederick Parmenter and Alessandro Berardelli were carrying two lockboxes containing around $16,000 of payroll money for the workforce at the Slater and Morrill shoe factory down Pearl Street in South Braintree, Massachusetts when two men came out and attacked them (Topp 1). Berardelli dropped his box immediately however the robbers killed him without hesitation. Parmenter held on to his lockbox in an attempt to resist the robbery and was shot twice, causing him to die hours later (Topp). After obtaining the payroll boxes, a getaway car came to carry the robbers out of town. The accepted amount of time that the robbery took was under a minute (Topp 1). This robbery took place at a unique time in American history.
