Hardy and Jude Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Throughout the novel Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy, many socially accepted customs and actions are questioned through the characters of Arabella, Jude, and Sue. Some may say that Hardy somewhat sculpted the decisions the characters in the story make in order to voice his opinion on what was deemed as a socially acceptable attitude or action, especially when it came to the subject of marriage. In the beginning of the novel, it is plain to see that marriage was something not respected by either Jude or Arabella. Arabella, because she knows that Jude would never marry her unless something terribly necessary forced Jude into marriage, decides to say she is pregnant. This is one of the first occurrences where Hardy uses characters and their actions as frames for his own beliefs. First of all, Arabella and Jude were abusing marriage according to their time period by engaging in premarital intercourse. This paints a picture to the reader that Hardy might not deem marriage necessary for sex to occur without being seen as morally wrong. Also, marriage is portrayed to Jude as a prison; h......
