Have you ever felt so lost in your life from difficult struggles and situations that you felt you lost yourself? In Ragtime, a novel taking place in turn of the century America, E.L. Doctorow shows through the characters Younger Brother and Father that certain events in life can cause self destruction and lead to losing yourself.
The event that changes Father’s life forever is his exploration to the Artic. Father is described in the beginning as a hard worker in the fireworks business, a very loving and devoted husband to his wife, Mother. Father has done a terrible thing by cheating on his wife with someone he doesn’t care about and sees as nothing. “He had heard the wind howl at night and had clasped with love and gratitude the foul body, like a stinking fish, of an Esquimo woman.” (Doctorow, 92). By sleeping with a woman he doesn’t care about, Father has produced self destruction inside himself by committing adultery on Mother.
