What was Cavour's contribution to Italian Unification? In the history of Italian unification and the process by which the Italian Republic, and later the Kingdom of Italy, actually became what we know today as the country of Italy, three figures stand out: Mazzini, Garibaldi, and Cavour. These great names, all subjects of the King of Sardinia, helped forge the Kingdom of Italy making it a unitary state with a constitutional system of government. Cavour Count Camillo Benso di was one of these essential men that lead the course of the unification with fundamental contributions. Cavour was a statesman born into an aristocratic Piedmontese family as the second son. Coming from a noble family of strong traditional values he found himself a position in the army, joining the military academy of Turin at the early age of ten. After leaving college at only sixteen years of age, he spent the following years in the army, dedicating all his free time to intense studying, especially that of the English language.
