Progress and Power: The Barbarism of Modern Civilization Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Slovenian psychoanalyst Slavoj Žižek says that philosophy is not a discipline where answers are to be sought. Rather, philosophy is a byproduct of millennia of intellectual ferment, where problems are redefined (Zizek 2006, p.137). Thus, Herbert Spencer redefines “progress” as the increase in heterogeneity of the human species. To illustrate, he argues that from a homogenous embryo, organisms evolve to a complex species, with human beings the foremost example of it. Spencer explicates that heterogeneity brings about more specificity – that is, as more races and classes separate themselves from one another, their function in society also becomes more and more different. Here, different is not defined as not being similar. Instead, it is the difference in function, while when viewed in general, the human race still falls into categories that when mapped out, will look like a pyramid. The topmost position is occupied by an individual, such as a monarch, lord, minister or president. The next rung below is occupied by a handful of individuals who are more or less privileged or powerful.......
