The Roles of Women in Pride and Prejudice Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In the nineteenth century British women were expected to marry and have children, the idea was that upper and middle class women had to stay dependent on a man; first as a daughter and then later as a wife. This fact is portrayed in the novel Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen, and set in 1814. Pride and Prejudice shows the many roles and choices of women in middle and upper class society while both colluding and rejecting the social stereotypes of each woman who takes a different path. In Pride and Prejudice, women in middle and upper class usually lived a life of idle anticipation, and were the trophies of the men. For example, “a woman must have a thorough knowledge of music, singing, drawing, dancing and the modern languages possess a certain something in her air and manner of walking, the tone of her voice, her address and expressions or the word will be but half deserved.” Women were denied a full education as that was only for men, and instead were encouraged to learn and take pleasure in all that was beautiful and refined.
