PEOPLE POWER-FEMINISM IN AUSTRALIA Feminist ideas played an increasingly significant role in Australian society from the period of 1960-1990. Imagine yourself as an Australian woman in the years after the Second World War; denied basic rights, tied to domestic duties in the home, and discriminated against in the workplace. Then the 1960’s came along with a sweeping change in thought that women should have a say in their government, that they should have the opportunity to pursue interests beyond their families without feeling guilty, and that they were entitled to a career and wages equal to men. The women's liberation movement of the 1960’s helped all these changes to come about. Its members organised themselves in groups and devised a series of radical feminist policies teamed with shock tactics, such as burning their bras in public, to get the public’s attention. Many levels of Australian society were affected by this change.
