The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a novel about wealth, corruption, and death. He uses lots of symmetry and symbolism to describe the events and characters in which those themes occur. One of hiss most frequently utilized motifs to symbolize and mirror is color. Fitzgerald uses the color yellow to describe the rich characters, how their materialism corrupts them and subsequently leads them to their demise.
In The Great Gatsby, the color yellow is a symbol for wealth; therefore the wealthy characters are consistently described in yellow. When Nick Caraway, first saw Jay Gatsby’s car, he described “his station wagon scampering like a yellow brisk bug,” (39). Fitzgerald decided to describe the car as being yellow to represent Gatsby’s materialism. Yet, it is almost a contradiction as Fitzgerald wrote his car was a bug because bugs are not lavish accessories such as fancy cars.
