Though this excerpt from David Auburn’s Proof obviously refers to mathematics, it also seems to have a double meaning in that it also refers to life and how one should live their life. Auburn uses his words to express a strong message: the importance of living everyday like it is the last and accomplishing everything you want while you still can. The story opens on Catherine having a late-night conversation with her father, Robert. Catherine is worried that she, like her father will inherit mental illness soon. It then transpires that Robert died a week before, of heart failure, and the funeral is the next day. Hal, a former student of Robert's, enters. He has been working on Robert's notebooks. Catherine fears that Hal may be stealing one of her father's and as he is about to leave, a notebook falls from his jacket pocket. He explains his intenti......
