In the song, Lord Give Me a Sign, DMX writes about an emotional feeling he has inside him. He feels he needs God’s help to succeed and wants to leave his old ways of life. In doing so he exemplifies the conflict within himself and the devil as he asks God for help. DMX also uses sentimentalism when he expresses his feelings and when pleads for God’s help to “bring h[im] closer” (45). DMX uses his self-conscious, to express his own inner feelings, creating an interior monologue song.
DMX’s inner conflict is understood to be his evil doings and he realizes he needs rejuvenation. His conflict is within himself but he “rebuk[es]” (28) the devil for “trying to make [him] do what [he] used to” (29). Since he is all mixed up in different emotions “[he] feel[s] like [he’s] alone” (19) implying that his emotions have gotten to him and he realizes that he needs someone to help him “Jesus”. As “[he] soaks up trouble like rain in the dirt” (23) he recognizes that the only way for him to feel better and be a better person is for him himself to change and “wit jus the mention of [his] saviors n......
