Flannery O’Connor relies heavily upon the use of symbolism as she spins her Souther tale “A Good Man Is Hard to Find.” As Lucretia B. Yaghjian says “she voiced a characteristic religious ambivalence concerning symbol. It leaves the reader to work with many images and ideas of what the author really means.” This story provides symbolism between the grandmother and the Old South. The grandmother is very talkative and manipulative because she is the oldest of the family, she tries to control every situation. This story also has strong religious symbols and the author makes use of vision and foreshadowing.
The grandmother represents the Old South with her knowledge of historic homes and wanting respect. People who have grown up in the Old South seem to be very educated about the history of their native state. This influences old southerners to become more interested in sight-seeing places of this nature.
