Philosophy on ethics 12/1/06 “The ethics of addiction” Critical Essay Addiction in America is seen to be an illness in the population’s eyes. Being an addict is known to be the worst thing that you could be. The cliché of it all is that if you are an addict you don’t know how to have any work ethics, you can not function as a normal functioning person and you are looked upon as scum. These assumptions of an addict are not true facts in the eyes of others but the government, as said by Thomas Szasz. Addiction in Szasz’s opinion is not a clinical illness as thought by many in America because of the government’s propaganda against drugs and other substances such as cigarettes and alcohol. Being an addict isn’t because the person is addicted to the substance per say but because it becomes a ritualistic act in ones life. You can be “addicted” to anything such as, always reading the paper as soon as you get up, drinking a glass of water before you go to bed every night, or even watching the news every evening at six.
