Sparta: Role of Women in Ancient Society Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

SPARTAN WOMEN Spartan women were known for their beauty, education and independence. Unlike other Greek societies, women were given financial power and and the power of knowledge, which made Spartan society unique. Little is know about the status of women in Spartan society, only a description from the Ancient source Xenophon who describes a system which allowed much more freedom granted to women under the laws of Lycurgus (7th BC). Women played an active social role in society, however they were in no way involved in the communal life of the men (for example in their messes or military gatherings.) The Spartan women had much more independence and freedom than their athenian counterparts including their involvement in the running of estates, their ability to exercise with the menfolk and control over their financial situation. Women also able to fraternise with the men in public which gave them the ability to trade conversations and political witticisms with the men and women. Their outspoken nature and sharp wit was known throughout Greece and looked down upon by other societies......
