Picasso was especially committed to expressing his hate for war using Guernica as his subject, as evident in Guernica 1937. This is due to the fact that the bombing was unfair, unnecessary and inhumane. Guernica was unprotected and served as a shelter for civilians during the Spanish civil war in the 1930s and 40s.
Guernica was bombed as a display of Hitler’s military power. Picasso saw this as a hideous act of brutality and was determined to make this message heard and seen. Guernica has taken on the universal statement of protest against war; this is due to Picasso’s symbolic style of expressionism, reflecting his strong opposition to the event of the bombing of Guernica in 1937.
