The year: 1862, America had newly acquired a vast amount of land, which will help it become the superpower that it is today, whether it be through natural resources or population expansion. There is a slight problem there though, the vast plains, which were acquired in the purchase, are barely habitable and have freezing winters and searing hot summers. America came up with solution though, drawing on desperation, poverty and pure whim, America set up the Homestead Act. The Homestead Act was a guarantee that any one who would work the land for five years would be granted 160 acres. About 500,000 people took up the government’s offer. To land on the vast plains was difficult. Once the people got to the Plains, the immediate problem would be housing. Unfortunately, they were not many trees on the vast plains so the people had to look for other materials to build their houses. The only one available was dirt, namely sod. Sod was the top layer of dirt on the Great Plains, which was a mixture of dirt, dead grass and grass. They would cut the sod into squares to use as bricks to build the......
