1. INTRODUCTION South Africa has been facing a serious HIV/AIDS epidemic. A recent estimate calculated that approximately 345,640 South Africans died in 2006 because of AIDS, accounting for 47% of all deaths in South Africa.# Reports reveal that the number of AIDS-related deaths each year has risen an alarming 79% between 1997 and 2004.# This statistics demonstrate that South Africa is failing in the fight against HIV/AIDS. This paper will explore the reasons for the failure of the fight against HIV/AIDS in South Africa both on a domestic and an international level. This paper will argue that this failure cannot be accredited primarily to any single factor, but rather is the result of a combination of factors, some with more devastating effects than others. First, the nature of this illness will be explained, along with the prevalence and magnitude of its occurrence within the South African population.
