GLOBAL WARMING - A TRADGEDY OF THE COMMONS: AN ETHICAL PERSPECTIVE December 20th 2006 Greenhouse Gases Greenhouse gases are gaseous components of the atmosphere that contribute to the greenhouse effect. The major greenhouse gases are water vapor, which causes about 36-70% of the greenhouse effect on Earth; carbon dioxide, which causes 9-26%; methane, which causes 4-9%, and ozone, which causes 3-7%. Other greenhouse gases include, but are not limited to, nitrous oxide, sulfur hexafluoride, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons and chlorofluorocarbons. Some greenhouse gases occur naturally in the atmosphere, while others result from human activities. Figure 1 shows global greenhouse gas emissions broken down by sectors. Green House Effect When sunlight reaches Earth's surface some is absorbed and warms the earth.
