Rembrandt Harmenzoon van Rijn was one of the first major, progressive and innovative Dutch artists of his generation. He was born in Leyden on the 15th of July, 1606 and he died in Amsterdam on October 4th, 1669 at the age of 63 1. Around the age of seven the young Rembrandt attended Latin school, but it was very clear that he was not interested in becoming a scholar instead he had a keen interest in painting and art 2. From 1622 to 1624 Rembrandt began a short period of apprenticeship under the teachings of an Italian – trained painter, Jacob van Swanenburg. In 1624 Rembrandt started to study under a new master from Amsterdam called Pieter Lastman 3. Lastman had a key role in the influences of Rembrandt. He was an historical painter and much of his subject matter was taken from Biblical references.
