Things Fall Apart Things fall apart by Chinua Achebe is a complex portrait of African tribal society prior to European colonization. The novel illustrates a notion of balance between genders. Beginning with the excerpt from Yeats's poem, "The Second Coming," the concept of balance is stressed as important, for, without balance, order is lost. Achebe shows his viewpoint of the African cultures unjust balance of masculinity and femininity. He proves that there is a balance to this system, but that the balance is lost. He confirms his thoughts through the actions of Okonkwo, Okonkwo’s son Nwoye, and the religion of the tribe where they live. Okonkwo was born the son of Unoka. Unoka was a man who was too lazy to go out and plant crops on new land, and preferred to stay at home playing his flute, drinking wine, and hanging out with the neighbors. Because of this, his father never had enough money, and his family went hungry. Okonkwo perceived this as an imbalance toward the female side in his father's character: staying at home and not using one's strength to provide for the famil......
