Ancient Greece and Rome are commonly associated as similar classical civilizations. Both of these empires seemed to have shared comparable elements in their societies; however, a closer examination into two historic works reveal that these two magnificent civilizations might not have been as alike. Greece’s characteristics will be based on “Pericles’ Funeral Speech,” while Rome’s characteristics will be based on Pliny the Younger’s “Correspondence With the Emperor.” Analyzing these two works will assist in analyzing whether or not Greece and Rome should be spoke of as a unified “classical” period in western civilization.
Loyalty was and still is an important virtue that came up often in both of the historic readings because without loyalty to their country and religion, Greece and Rome might not have been as great as they were.
