Albert Speer was born on March 19, 1905 in Mannheim, Germany. His father persuaded him to take up architecture. In 1923 Speer began his architectural studies at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and by 1927 he graduated as an architect. During his studies the Nazis were gaining a lot of momentum. Speer appeared to have no interest in politics. Speer was however aware of the challenges that Germany faced in the early 1920�s. In 1927 he married Margarete Weber and informed his parents by telegram. During his architectural studies Speer came under the influence of Professor Heinrich Tessenow, whose ideas on architecture had an important influence of Speer. After he graduated as an architect in 1927 he began to work as Tessenow�s assistant. By 1930 Germany was suffering the impact of the great depression and the Nazis were growing in influence. Many of Speer�s fellow students now supported the Nazis, even his mentor Professor Tessenow. In December 1930 Speer was persuaded to attend a political meeting by Hitler.
