The AIDS pandemic has affected numerous parts of Sub-Saharan Africa. In the story “Chanda’s Secrets” the author, Allan Stratton, tries to depict how societies in this part of the world use silence and secrecy to maintain a sense of social control. The protagonist of the story, Chanda, has personally lost her mother, sister, and best friend because of this particular disease. However, even though many in the societies are affected, the disease poses as a form of disgrace because of the way it can be contracted. The problematic issues with AIDS influence the use of silence and secrecy to socially control an individual’s social status, protection of one’s family, and causes people to conceal their true emotions.
In society, social status poses as a significant part of life. AIDS can affect social status almost instantly because people not only contract AIDS but also the stereotype that comes with it.
