The Feminist Critique of the 1920’s
Between the two novels Bread Givers, by Anzia Yezierska, and A Lost Lady, by Willa Cather, the expectations of women in the 1920’s are demonstrated through several characters. Women were expected to act a certain way and if they didn’t act that way they were looked down upon by society. Throughout each one of these novels there are examples of how women should act and also how they rebelled against their time period.
The feminist critique of what U.S. society was in the 1920’s has similarities and differences to the present day. Women were expected to be independent and dependent depending on who they were with and where they were. Women were independent while they were cooking and cleaning, but then they were also supposed to dependent on their husbands when they were given orders or decisions needed to be made. Women were expected to bare children and then raise them while husbands went to work. Young women were expected to get married at a young age because they didn’t have other choices and depended on a man to support them and take ......
