Eight Stages of Genocide
The first stage of genocide is classification. In the early stages categories are created to
distinguish and separate different levels of society within one same community. The
following stage in the process is symbolization. This stage gives a name to who you are
or your ethnic group represents. In the case of Nazi Germans they labeled anyone not of
German pure blood decent a “Jew”. My experience as a child was to hear the words “wet
back” or “mojado” used as a derogatory term for those of Mexican decent that crossed
the Mexican-American border illegally. Salvadorian friends of my family often refer to
each other as “cerotes”. Growing up in Los Angeles, where there is a large population of
immigrants from El Salvador, I dared to one day ask an acquaintance of mine exactly
why one would refer to another as a piece of shit. He explained that during the civil war
the oppressors would use this dehumanizing term “cerote” to identify the lower class
