On Saturday June 10th, 1871, a venerable old man, approaching his eightieth birthday was invited to a reception at The Academy of Music in New York. He was Samuel Finley Breese Morse, and he used the occasion of the reception to send a farewell message from himself to the telegraph fraternity of the world, signed with his own signature in American Morse code:-
S ... F .-. B -... M -- O .. R . .. S ... E .

Samuel Morse was born in Charlestown Massachusetts on April 27th, 1791, the first child of pastor Jedidiah Morse, and Elizabeth Ann Breese Morse.
