Industrialization occurred after the Civil War when the cost of manufactured products far exceeded the value of farm products. The country shifted from an agrarian economy to one in which industry predominated. Other factors contributing to industrialization were improved transportation and communication systems, technological inventions, development of new materials and merchandising techniques, and an abundance of laborers willing to work for low wages. The nation grew more rapidly than ever and the population shifted from a largely homogeneous population of Western European immigrants into a population of immigrants throughout the world. Huge capital and labor markets combined to lower production costs, raise output and create large amounts of consumer goods. The nation entered a new period in history, one of tremendous growth and achievement on one hand, and enormous waste on the other.
