Abstract While each criminal commits crimes for their own perceived reasons, criminologists and sociologists have assembled a collection of theories that when applied to most criminal behaviors attempts to rationalize their circumstances. For a few years in the mid 1980’s, a seemingly prolific serial killer, Henry Lee Lucas, became the focus of intense infamy by confessing to hundreds of murders in 19 different states. When his highly publicized trials were over, we had come to learn much about the cause of his murderous behavior as well as a good deal about the condition of our own criminal justice system. The Early Life of Henry Lee Lucas When we think of serial killers, we tend to draw images of severely disturbed men in their late twenties to early thirties perceiving them as nothing short of monsters living out elaborate fantasies with an increasingly bizarre appetite for death. Their utter disregard for human life usually instilled during a somehow neglected childhood and first evident in their whimsical slaughter of smaller, dominated animals.
