Each type of subsistence strategy has its positives and negatives. The climate and
land is what makes a particular ethnic group choose which subsistence strategy works
best for them. Food foraging is practiced by about 250,000 people around the world. It’s
usually found among people who live in the Arctic, deserts, or remote forests. Food
foraging is the hunting, fishing, and wild plant gathering in order to eat. The Mbuti live
in the Ituri rainforest of Congo. They are food foragers but they also trade with their
neighbors. The Mbuti trade the meat that they hunt for manufactured goods. In a food
foraging society there is no surplus or land ownership. The population density is also low.
The Tsembaga people of Papua New Guinea survive through horticulture.
They’re able to grow their own food by using simple hand tools to plant their crops. They
also hunt pigs for sacrifices and as a source of protein. Another reason why they kill the
