ABSTRACT More than 400 prisoners have been executed in Singapore by hanging since 1991. This makes Singapore the country with the highest execution rate in the world relative to its population size, easily double the execution rate of the country with the next highest execution rate, Saudi Arabia. The prisoners executed include foreign nationals. Approximately three quarter of those executed were convicted of drug offences while others were executed for murder or firearms offences. These crimes carry a mandatory death sentence which leaves no room for the trial judge to take into account any mitigating circumstances in any situation. In this research report, I will focus on the death penalty in relation to drug offences. This is to create awareness of this issue as it could well be that many working class families may not be even aware of the issue as there is little public discussion or debate on this issue.
