Boston Massacre: Cause of the American Revolution Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Boston Massacre played a significant role in the outcome of the Revolutionary War. The Boston Massacre was the main reason why the Revolutionary War started because after the Boston Massacre, people realized that the British were not there to help them, but rather to destroy their liberty. The massacre started on the night of March 5, 1770, when a crowd gathered around a British soldier who had struck a boy in the head. The boy was a young barber named Edward Garrick. He had harassed a soldier, as most of the people of Boston did. Soon an angry crowd formed. The soldier Hugh White retreated and called for help. Captain Thomas Preston and seven men came to his aid. Suddenly the church bells rang, which meant that there was a fire. Obviously, there was no fire; however, the bells just rang to get the people out into the streets to form a larger crowd of angry people. The people threw snowballs and pieces of ice at Captain Preston and his men. When a piece of ice hit Private Hugh Montgomery, he fired into the crowd out of rage.
