The Chesapeake Colonies and the New England Colonies 2nd In the sixteen and seventeen hundreds the New World (America) was established by the puritans and by the plantation owners of Chesapeake Bay from England. The puritans came to the new world with the hope to start a new pure church that can serve as an example for the Church of England and the other colonies. Governor Winthrop called it the “City upon a Hill”. The puritans established a completely religious society along the Massachusetts Bay. They made laws, and they led a democratic state, they declared that theocracy and democracy needed each other, a lot of the laws were based on biblical truths. The Massachusetts General Court, which was granted power by the colony’s charter, had the authority to elect officers and make laws for the colony. They had their first meeting on October of 1630, which was attended by only eight freemen. Thomas Dudley was the leader of the group that leaded the puritans into their first revolution. By 1641 the colony had its first code of law call......
