The United Nations Charter, Chapter 6, Article 33(1) sets forth a comprehensive list of peaceful means for the resolution of conflict: The parties to a dispute shall, first of all, seek a solution by negotiation, inquiry, mediation, conciliation, arbitration, judicial settlement, resort to regional agencies or arrangements, or other peaceful means of their choice. These means for the peaceful resolution of conflict have been amplified in various General Assembly resolutions. These resolutions have helped the evolution of a normative framework for the peaceful settlement of disputes between states. The Charter and the General Assembly resolutions have also provided the basis for the various types of peacemaking initiatives the Secretary-General has undertaken through the use of his Good Offices.
