Spinsters; Is It A Problem? Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

‘Spinster’ suggest a woman who has remained single and never been married, though it is usually applied only to women who are regarded as beyond the normal age for marriage. It must have been a very long time since an unmarried woman referred to herself by this title in seriousness. Since the early seventeenth century, ‘spinster’, once an occupational designation referring to the operator of a spinning wheel, has been used to refer to a never married woman. In the western folk model, the spinster was caricatured as virginal and thus childless, ageing, unattractive, gossipy, and dour. In our modern language it has too many adverse connotations: a woman left on the shelf, an old maid, with nothing left but to become a benign busybody, keen on gardening and cats, bustling round the parish doing good works and cycling to Holy Communion through the morning mist. According to Doctor Charmaine Saunders (2002), a psychologist at Stanford University, Spinster suggests a tired old maid that no one wants, conjuring up images of plain features, paisley dresses and schoolmarm occu......
