Discovery of Australia by the Dutch Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The discovery of Australia Explorers from Holland were certainly some of the first explorers to visit various parts of the Australian coast, this being a major contribution to the discovery and mapping of Australia. In March 1606 William Jansz on board the Duyfken, travelled about 300 km along the west coast of the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland. It was the first documented landing on Australian soil. This shows that there had been no previous documentation of any preceding explorers that had landed on Australian Soil before William Jansz in 1606. This evidence alone gives us reason enough to credit William Jansz for the mapping of Australia. However, there have been recent findings that have shown a Portuguese landing a year before that of William Jansz. Many historians are still uncertain about this theory, purely because the Portuguese explorers were not recorded as having ever reached Australia before 1606.
