Air pollution is a chemical, physical or biological agent that modifies the natural characteristics of the atmosphere. The air surrounding the Earth or the atmosphere is made up of many different gases. The atmosphere is about 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and 1% miscellaneous gases. All human beings, animals, and plants need air to survive. Plants and Trees absorb the carbon dioxide in air to make food, and then release off oxygen. This reduces the amount of carbon dioxide in the air making it less polluted. Some of air pollution is caused by the release of harmful gases, such as sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and chemical vapors. These can take part in further chemical reactions once they are in the atmosphere, forming smog and acid rain. One kind of air pollution caused by chemicals in the air is acid rain. Eventually this will make rain, snow, or fog more acidic than normal. The main sources of these chemicals are exhaust from cars, trucks, and buses.
