People’s past sometimes torment them to an extent that affects their present; making them completely connected to the past and not be able to live their present day to the fullest. The past of a person is one of the most important factors for character development. Some people are haunted forever by a memory; while others can’t face their present day condition so they turn to what they used to have. The past is something that everyone can relate to, so it is a universal topic. This may be why authors many times write about character’s who are still holding on to reminiscences. Maya Angelou, and J.D Salinger, managed to illustrate complex characters with strong emotions. The central characters, Maya, of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and Holden, of The Catcher in the Rye are both average people whose feelings and circumstances have turned them into someone stuck in the past. The stories develop characters who are full of regret and wait for hope to give them a chance. Holden has an amazing capacity to hold onto past events. The events that happened are the one who shaped Holden......
