Clinical Depression Depression, as a clinical condition has likely existed among humans for many centuries; however it is only recently that it has been recognized as a clinical disorder, as the symptoms which include of sadness, anhedonia and despair; are all states which are experienced by people normally. Depression however occurs when someone experiences these symptoms every day for two weeks, or a majority of days for a 3 month period. The illness can then be correctly diagnosed by the DSM IV as a Axis one disorder (meaning that it is a major clinical disorder) , and it can be confirmed with the use of psychological questionares. The person suffering from the disorder is then able to undertake a range of treatments ranging from counseling to anti-depressant drugs. Depression as a disorder is one that is characterized largely by anhedonia (An inability to gain any joy out of activities) and depressed moods (moods characterized by feelings of sadness or despair).
