Song: Go and Catch a Falling Star The poem Song: go and Catch a Falling Star, written by John Donne, is a three-versed critique on the lack of constancy in women. The text is about how it is impossible to find a beautiful yet virginal woman, and is under laced with scorn towards the female race, and what Donne feels to be their failure to remain pure and honest. The main argument of the poem is that it is impossible to find a woman who is both beautiful and chaste and this argument is developed through each stanza; the first stanza is a series of questions, the seemingly impossible tasks portray the poet’s view of the impossibility for constancy in a woman. In the second stanza, Donne seems to be mocking love poems, with the use of the image of a man riding for ten thousand days, until he becomes old, a common romantic sentiment. Donne charges the recipient to search for a beautiful, virginal woman, and he seems extremely self assured, as he already knows what his answer will be.
