Living in Society’s Shackles
Throughout history, women have always been made to feel inferior to men, and have
suffered centuries of oppression because of it. However, women have often fought back against
their oppression through literature. The most genuine and compelling literary works that deal
with the oppression of women are created by people who have first-hand experience with those
feelings. One of Edith Wharton’s most famous work is The House of Mirth: A compelling novel
about the struggles women faced during the 20th century. These struggles are personified in the
main character Lily Bart. The events Edith Wharton experienced in her life strongly influenced
the themes in The House of Mirth, which illustrates the inescapable control of society over
women through Lily's futile search for marriage, her enslavement to monetary wealth, and her
ultimate demise.
